The Palace Theatre, Swansea 1888 -
The Palace Theatre, originally the Pavilion Theatre was built in 1888 and is in the High Street area of the city, the building has had a chequered existence, being used as a Theatre, Cinema, Makeshift Morgue ( during the blitz), A gay nightclub, Bingo Hall and even a furniture storage area. It is preserved by a Grade II listing, although where it goes from here is unclear as the costs involved in the refurbishment alone would run into millions of pounds. Famous acts to have performed at the theatre include Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd, Anthony Hopkins, Glyn Houston and Maudie Edwards. It was also the first venue in Swansea to show moving pictures. |
